me gone by When hope was high, And life worth living I dreamed that love would never die I dreamed that God would be forgiving. Then I was young and unafraid When dreams were made and used, And wasted There was no ransom to be paid No song unsung, No wine untasted. But the tigers come a

Ron, he was the most wonderful gentle man. He was in the French campaign and used to send edited reports home to the newspaper of conditions in the trenches. I still have some of those cuttings. He came out to South Africa in about 1926, when my dad was just four years old. My dad was in the Royal Navy, first on the minesweepers off the Cape coast and then later in the support vessels off Burma, Ceylon and Australia

SadieMy, I hope you are rightly proud of your forbears service. My father served in the RAF in WWII, flying Lancs in bomber command. He was not proud of the the death and destruction he caused but felt it needed to be done and was directed by the government anyway. He was wracked with mental anguish over that all his life. But he came back, 55,573 other bomber boys didn't.

My father in law was a wireless operator in the SAAF in the North African campaign. Often had to step in to do actual fighting as well. He is still alive at 96 years and can still recall many interesting things about the war, even if he doesn't remember his kids' names! See you all later.

385 - I think I saw the tail end of that discussion. I guess there are many of us here of the age to have parents who served in WWII and probably grandparent who served in WWI.

Today, of all days, I remember my grandfather. who fought at Mons, and survived four years of war, and my father, who was a POW for four years in WW2, and saw some terrible things, including witnessing indescribable horrors at Auswitch during a three week internment.

My father-in-law was a bomb aimer, who was shipped out to South Africa after his own training, and spent the war training S.A aircrews. He always said that he was so fortunate to have never aimed or dropped a bomb in anger

Londo - you, like others here have forebears to be proud of. War is evil but *not* waging war on even worse evil regimes when they threaten human liberty and life across dozens of countries is not a choice, in my opinion.

Londo, I didn't realize about all this history here. My father was in the navy, so was an uncle, my other uncles were in the air force. Jane Bailey's mom was in the RAF, too.

Finally, before I go, we must never be deceived by those who deny the holocaust:---such as some members of the BNP in Britain. My father witnessed the horrors of a concentration camp, and they haunted him all his life.

Londo - anyone who falls for that neo nazi Holocaust denial is a very poor deluded soul. It is serious crime in Austria and Germany. It should be here to in my opinion. As an aside there has been debate about the BNP using Churchill and Spitfire images in their advertising. That is bad enough but to make them look very silly the Spitfire is one painted in the colours of a Polish RAF squadron. LOL - one of the groups of immigrants they despise!

As it is, all kinds of extradition laws and red tape come into play, and Holocaust deniers keep on spreading this evil, sometimes for years, before they are silenced, sometimes very briefly, and then carry on right where they left off!
